How Beliefs Influence and Interact With Our World
|
It's a common argument I hear people make: 'Let people believe what they want to believe', insisting that religious beliefs are personal, they are benign they have no consequences to everyone else. Therefore, the beliefs of one person are his alone and it is no one else's business. This argument immunises religions from criticism and critique. In my book the Tyranny Of God, I discuss the consequences of these attitudes and argue that the beliefs of a person impacts on everyone else. But when thousands of people suffer everyday because a group of individuals believe it is their god's will, or because it is what they believe based on nothing else but their faith, then their beliefs become everybody else's business. Here, is a collection of news and current affairs I see every day to highlight the huge influence of religion in our lives and in our world. |

"Nigeria?s interim leader ordered the Army to restore order today in the central town of Jos where nearly 200 people have been killed in three days of clashes between Christians and Muslims. Sectarian clashes have erupted with deadly regularity. Hundreds were killed in separate incidents in 2008, 2004 and 2001 as Christians and Muslims battled one another on the streets, shooting and hacking each other to death and setting fire to homes and religious buildings." COMMENT: When there is little to divide people, they have religion. Religion is divisive.

'Bin Laden' is alive and well and living in Spain
| Religion - How Beliefs Influence and Interact With Our World |
The FBI put out images of their most wanted terrorists including Osama Bin Laden using highly sophisticated technology... so they say.
As it turns out, they just cut and pasted features of a Spanish politician on a layer of Bin Laden's. The politician saw the photo and contacted the FBI. The FBI admitted that their cutting-edge technology was not so cutting-edge after all. Very embarrassing.
If you look at the two photos though, I don't know how the politician was able to recognise his features. (Source)
